Gastronomy

A number of different gastronomic festivals are held in Mieres throughout the year. For example, the Festival of the Pote Asturiano (Asturian Hotpot) is held in the valley of Turón in December. This hotpot consists of fabes (large white beans), potatoes and greens, together with blood sausage, bacon and spicy cured sausage.

The Festival of Queso de Urbiés (Urbiés Cheese), a strong-flavoured, creamy cheese, is celebrated in June.

April is the month for the Gastronomic Festival of the Valley of Cuna and Cenera, where the visitor can try delicious meat dishes, thanks to the valleys livestock-raising tradition. Typical dishes include: cabritu (kid), menestra (vegetable stew), ragú (asado) de ternera (roast veal), and picadillo (minced spicy sausage meat) with farm-fresh eggs served over maize pancakes. Desserts consist of arroz con leche (rice pudding) or casadielles (hazelnut- or walnut-filled pastries).

During the Folixa na Primavera (Spring Frolics), the following can be savoured in any dining establishment: delicious sopa de ablanes (hazelnut soup), for starters; cabritu (kid) or bacalao (cod), for the main course; and, to top it all off, sorbete de sidra (cider sorbet) or borrachinos (cake soaked in cider or wine, with a strong, sweet taste).
