Gastronomy

Plasencia offers an endless list of restaurants, bars and taverns where the visitor may savour the most varied examples of our regional gastronomy, but the visitor must not miss trying some of the unique dishes from this area such as ancas de ranas (frogs legs), truffles known as criadillas de tierra (literally the Earths testicles) or exotic snails.

We also recommend the following dishes:

Ensalada de Zorongollo, a salad made with different flavoured and different coloured peppers which are roasted in the oven with onions and then left to cool before serving.

Migas (breadcrumbs), which in this case are made with lightly fried paprika to which the moistened migas are added. These are served on their own, as they have a lot of paprika (the queen of spices of the cuisine of northern Extremadura).

Calderetas (stews), either made with kid or lamb, since this is the dish par excellence of the area, as well as morcillas patateras y calabaceras (blood sausages made with potatoes and courgettes).

As far as fish is concerned, there is no seaport, but we recommend trout, tench (a fish that lives in still-standing waters), as well as salted fish, since the age-old lack of fresh fish led to specialisation in the desalting of this type of fish.

Not to forget fresh Cheese covered in honey and polen, any cherry product or fig and acorn chocolates. For the more daring, a glass of cherry or acorn liqueur, or the local kirsch, which should be accompanied by the typical perrunillas (small cakes).
