Santiponce came into existence on the banks of the River Guadalquivir, in a place called Isla de Hierro (The Isle of Iron). Due to its proximity to the river, it suffered frequent flooding. During one such event, which occurred on the 20th December 1603, it was buried forever. The survivors sought protection under the monks of the Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo, who ceded them higher ground.
And so the new Santiponce was built, almost in its entirety, on the ruins of the Roman city of ITALICA.
