Benavente - León (100 km)

 

A fair part of the route crosses cereal plains, but you will also traverse the dense wooded colonnades along the Rivers Esla and Orbigo. This is a stage with very little difference in elevation. However, the slight uphill ascent in combination with the frequent winds that blow in the area can make the route more or less difficult. The scenery gradually changes towards the end of the stage with the appearance of abundant irrigated land, very similar to what will accompany you on the next stage.
You are now on the Road to Santiago, though the route goes counter to the flow of pilgrims. The trails on this stage are very well signposted and well kept, so you should not come across any difficulty. Numerous villages along the route are worth stopping at, especially Hospital de Orbigo, with its famous bridge, which is one of the symbols of the route. Don’t forget to get to León in time to enjoy a stroll around its streets and pay a visit to its magnificent cathedral. It is recommendable to rest in this stage, as the following will put your staying power and legs to the test.
