This is the
blue-ribbon stage of the entire route and so it may be of interest to divide it into two stages, depending on your strength. There are also several problems worth noting. The first is the route out of León, which is not very well signposted and so it is easy to get lost. In the vicinity of Pola de Gordón, works on the new high speed railway make going difficult. Depending on the circumstances of these works, you may have to take an alternative route. The ascent to
Pajares Pass marks the highest point on the route, while the descent can be complicated for those carrying panniers. Once you have crowned Pajares Pass, you will have overcome the worst, while the spectacular views will more than compensate the difficulty of the route.
This stage is especially complicated if you are thinking of doing the route in winter. An agreeable surprise awaits you a short distance before the end of this stage, namely the Pre-Romanesque church of Santa Cristina, which heralds the Asturian Pre-Romanesque architecture that you will encounter en route to Oviedo.
