The landscape of Asturias still holds a tough test for you. Although there are no longer any great heights, the constant up and downhill nature of the route will put your staying power to the test. Luckily, this stretch of the route is fairly straightforward, although the part between Mieres and Oviedo holds a complicated stretch or two. Once past Oviedo, the difficulties will gradually diminish; a fair part of the remaining stage until reaching Gijón follows small country roads with very little traffic. Your arrival in Gijón and the sight of the sea will be delayed by the complexity of the landscape, although the last descent will finally take you right down to the seashore.
There are several localities worth visiting on this stage of the route:
The municipality of ALLER, in central-southern Asturias, boasts beautiful valleys that are home to autochthonous woods and meadowland, as well as spectacular natural monuments and beautiful alpine scenery.
RIOSA, to the east of Mieres, is a first-class tourist destination of a different kind that includes prehistoric mining remains that are unique worldwide, a great mountain pass for cyclists and a grandiose natural setting right in the heart of the Aramo mountain range.
MORCÍN, in the centre of Asturias, is a small borough home to the outstanding historical monument of Peñerudes Tower and the protected landscape of the Sierra del Aramo.
In the central mountains of Asturias, you can visit RIBERA DE ARRIBA, an area of low relief accompanied by two heights and two valleys through which flow the Rivers Caudal and Nalón.
